Dive Sites

Majority of diving in Red Sea is carried out through a ‘Live aboard Dive Boat’ or a shore-based, ‘Day Boat Dive Operation’. The currents here differ from zero current to extremely strong; so the divers are recommended to snorkel or dive with well experienced divers or guides who had dove in this area before.  Not only that, they also need to be familiar with the climatic conditions. Some diving ‘Skill Levels’ have been defined for helping the divers in evaluating the skill required for every dive site.

Snorkeler

He can be described as a person good in swimming and well experienced in the ocean snorkeling.

Novice Driver

He can be described as a person physically fit with a certification in diving, or the one having obtained the certificate before but taken a break from diving or the one having no experience under similar circumstances.

Advanced Diver

He can be described as a person having logged lots of dives under same or rougher circumstances, along with physical fitness.

Dive instructor or master

He can be described as a person having advanced training in the form of dive instructor or master having logged over hundred dives under similar circumstances, along with physical fitness.

Some popular dive sites in the ‘Red Sea’ can be illustrated as follows:

Blue Hole

It is located at a distance of a few miles/Km to the north of ‘Dahab Village’. A pleasant site, with the biggest attraction lying in the sloping reef located on the outside. The entry to this site is all the way through a big lagoon located at the reeftop. This lagoon resembles a ‘blue hole’; that’s why; the name. The slope of the reef is pretty rich in corals which include acropora, star, and brain corals. All these fall in the category of hard corals.

The aquamarine life includes triggerfish, surgeonfish, grouper, angels, parrotfish, unicorns, and jacks. However, they are all found in the outer part. The inner part hardly contains anything. The divers are advised to keep away from exceeding the utmost depth limits from the safety point of view.

Maklouf

Maklouf is located at a distance of 48 km to the north of ‘Quseir’ on the coast of the ‘Red Sea’. It can be entered through a ‘Canyon’ that descends through reeftop’s coral mass. The section to the south is specifically rich in corals having a hard nature. Soft corals are also observed. This area contains a large number of fusiliers and jacks, along with numerous ‘Swarming Coral Fish’, like fairy basslets, damsels, and glassfish on different coral blocks and heads. It is densely populated with Lionfish, bluespotted stingrays, and crocodilefish.

Turtle Bay

Turtle bay is located at the Sinai coast. It lies in between paradise sites and Pinky’s Wall. This site can be described as a ‘Medium Sloping Reef’, which is bounded by a small wall inshore to about 10m and shallow reeftop between 30 and 40 meters. The fish life consists of th sedentary ones, along with scorpions, stonefish, hawkfish, and lizardfish. There is a huge variety of free-swimming species (of reef).
